Casino poker are the poker games that you can find in the online casino but you play against the dealer and not against other players in the casino. Casino Poker is the poker variant where, as the name suggests, you take on the casino. Unlike other poker games where you compete against other players, in casino poker your goal is to beat the dealer. Other players have nothing to do with you.

You play directly against the dealer with the goal of winning. Casino poker comes in different forms and there are different rules. On this page you’ll read about the most common casino poker games and, of course, where to play them.

How To Play Casino Poker?

We will start at the beginning as this is necessary because there are many different poker variations and each game works slightly differently. Basically, you can say that casino poker is always played against the dealer and not against other players. You put down a mandatory bet (ante) and after receiving your cards you can decide whether to play or pass. If you pass (fold), you lose the ante. If you choose to continue playing, you will have to make an additional bet. Next, if you have a better hand than the dealer, you win.

The person with the best hand wins. But what is the best hand, and how do you know which cards are good and which are not? Below you can see the different combinations that are possible in (casino) poker. Please note that in certain casino games some combinations are not possible. It’s always a good idea to check the rules of the game before playing casino poker.

Hands

A combination of the cards in your hand, it also called hand value. In casino poker, the better your hand is, the more you get paid out. Winning with a pair of sevens will pay less than winning with a full-house. If you’re not familiar with these terms, see below for exactly what they mean.

  • Royal Flush: The highest possible combination. 10JQKA of the same kind. The highest street in the same kind of cards.
  • Straight Flush: Five ascending cards of the same suit. For example, A2345 of hearts.
  • Four of a Kind: Four of the same cards, this can be four kings or four fives.
  • Full House: Three of a kind + a pair. An example is 55577.
  • Flush: five cards of the same suit, i.e. five hearts, five spades or five clubs.
  • Straight: Also called a street. A combination of five consecutive cards. A2345 or 56789 or 10JQKA.
  • Three of a kind: Three of the same cards. Three nines or three aces.
  • Two Pair: Two pairs as above. So a pair of sevens and sixes for example.
  • Pair: Two of the same cards, such as two jacks or two fives.
  • Ace High or Ace/King (High Card): Your highest card is an ace which can be matched by a king.

Poker Variants

Poker comes in all shapes and sizes, and the same is true when playing poker against the casino. There are a number of poker games that you’ll find in almost every online casino. The most famous poker variant is Caribbean Stud Poker but also Casino Hold’em and Pai Gow Poker are variants that you’ll find at online casinos.

There are even games that you can play against a dealer in a live casino. Through a live stream, you can follow the dealer’s actions while you see your cards in front of you. This adds another dimension to casino poker. Let’s see what the most common casino poker games are.

Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean Stud is surely the most famous poker game. You play against the house and are dealt five cards. The dealer is also dealt five cards. Before you receive your cards, you first bet the ante. After you’ve seen your cards, you can decide to play or fold. A fold will cost you your ante, but if you play you will have to bet twice the ante. It is important to know that the dealer only plays with A/K or higher. If the dealer’s hand is lower, he will not play and you will get 2x your ante back and your bet will be refunded.

It only gets really interesting if the banker has a hand that qualifies. Then you can win a really high amount. The payouts can be up to 200 times your bet.

Caribbean Stud Poker Sidebets: Some games even have a progressive jackpot and you can place a side bet on it. By placing a side bet you can make an even bigger profit. For example, a four of a kind with this sidebet will net you 250:! And a straight flush will net you 2500:1. So you bet more, but you get much more payouts than if you didn’t play the side bet.

Another popular side bet is the 5+1 side bet. This allows you to use not only your own cards, but also the dealer’s face down card. This gives you six cards to make a combination. An important rule in this variation is that winning combinations only apply if you have three or more cards in your hand. Lesser hands win nothing extra.

As you can see, Caribbean Stud Poker is slightly different from Texas Hold’em that you might play in a poker room or with friends. However, online casinos have found a different variant for this and that is Casino Hold’em.

Casino Hold’em

Casino Hold’em is a relative poker game that was only introduced in the year 2000. As the name suggests, it is based on Texas Hold’em. However you don’t play against other players, but against the casino aka the banker/dealer. This variant can also be played in the live casino. Evolution Gaming, for example, has released a beautiful Casino Hold’em live game.

Just like in Caribbean Stud, you first bet with an Ante. You are then dealt two cards, after which the three cards of the flop follow immediately. You can then decide to call or fold, just like in Texas Hold’em. Folding will cost you your ante. Calling will cost you twice your ante. After that, you are shown the turn (fourth card) and river (fifth card).

The hand values are the same with Casino Hold’em, but winning works a bit differently. For example, you don’t get paid the same amount for every hand. If you win when the dealer has a hand lower than a pair of fours, you get the winning payout on the ante and not on the call bet, The call bet is then returned (push).

If the dealer has 44 or higher and you beat the dealer, you get the call bet paid out 1:1 and can follow the payout table. This often gives 100:1 for a royal flush and for example 3:1 for a flush.

Sidebets Casino Hold’em: In addition to the regular bets, side bets are also available here. There is the AA bonus side bet. Here you bet that you’ll hit a winning hand with your own two cards and the flop and get paid extra. For example, for a pair of aces you get 7:1, a flush 20:1, full house 30:1 and this runs intermittently to 100:1 with a royal flush.

Finally, in some games there is also the 7 Jumbo Bonus. This is another side bet. For example, with a 7 card flush you can win the jackpot, and with a 6-card flush you get $ 5,000. Of course you pay an extra stake for both side bets, but in return you can benefit from considerably higher winnings.

Pai Gow Poker

Although Caribbean Stud and Casino Hold’em are the most popular, you can also play other poker games against a dealer. A well-known example is Pai Gow Poker. Here you have to make two hands out of 7 cards. You make a two-card hand and a five-card hand. The five card hand must also be stronger than the two card hand. The banker does the same and your goal is again to beat the dealer.

In order to win, both your hands must be better than the dealer’s. Pai Gow is a bit different from the above mentioned games. You can tell by the number of cards. You play this game with 52 cards and a joker. Also, A2345 street is higher than 910JQK street. The A is both the highest and lowest card and therefore you win with the A through 5. Finally, you can also use the joker to make a straight or flush. Just like a wild in slots.

One disadvantage of Pai Gow Poker is that if you win, you have to pay 5% commission. That is not the case with Caribbean Stud and Casino Hold’em.
